Hormone Replacement Therapy

Both men and women can benefit from hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) uses hormones that are biologically identical to what is produced in the human body. Bioidentical hormones are derived from plants and have the same chemical structure as human hormones. While there is a place for mass-produced, synthetic or animal-derived hormone treatments that mimic human hormones, bioidentical hormones have some distinctly different physiological effects compared to their synthetic counterparts. For example:

  • Bioidentical progesterone is associated with a much lower risk for breast cancer, compared to the increased risk associated with synthetic progestins

  • Bioidentical progesterone avoids the variety of negative cardiovascular effects that come with the use of synthetic progestins

  • Due to its unique physiological effects, bioidentical estriol is associated with a much lower risk of breast cancer compared to estradiol or estrone.

  • Structural differences between the natural and synthetic hormones cause unwanted and intolerable side effects, e.g. bioidentical progesterone and the synthetic medroxyprogesterone

At VivaRx, we understand that each person’s body – and their individual hormonal makeup – is unique. Certain food additives, household cleaners, plastics and even some prescription medications can affect overall hormone health. Additionally, nutrition, diet, exercise and stress levels are all important factors to take into consideration when determining a patient’s hormone goals.
